When Union Station opened
in 1931, the current location of the soda fountain was also home to
the gift shop, as well as a candy & cigar shop. Both the soda
fountain and the gift shop were very popular stops for travelers waiting
for a train.
The gift shop offered small items such as postcards, toys, personal hygiene products, candy and cigars.
Today, visitors to Durham Western Heritage Museum can step back in time with a visit to the old-fashioned 1931 Soda Fountain, complete with milk shakes, sundaes, malts and phosphates. Visitors of all ages are sure to enjoy a special treat!
