SNAKE down the Amazon River to your favorite summer
fun destination, the Durham Western Heritage Museum!
Welcome back, campers. With the exhibit, “Amazon Voyage: Vicious Fishes & Other Riches” on display from June 1 to August 31, the Durham’s feature camp of the summer is “Amazon Adventure Camp.”
“Amazon Adventure Camp” allows children the unique opportunity to learn and explore the most biologically diverse river in the world. Through class activities and lots of interaction in the exhibit, “Amazon Adventure Camp” kids will experience the seven perils of the Amazon and the culture of this important region.
And as always, the Durham offers tons of old favorites to sink your teeth into. Whether it is fitness, science, history, drama, or art – you’ll find it all at the Durham Western Heritage Museum!
So take a peek inside and see if there is anything that floats your boat. We look forward to working with you to make your summer AMAZING!
DAY CAMP FEES Full payment required for registration to be processed.

Smithsonian Day Camp:

Before & After care:
$30 pays for before AND after care for the five days your child is enrolled in a Durham Day Camp. Before Care is from 7:45 to 9 am and After Care is from 4 to 5:15 pm. During Before and After Care, children play games, draw, read or participate in other activities supervised by education staff.
Please Note: Drop-ins for Before Care and After Care are subject to availability. The rate for drop-in care is $10 per morning or afternoon.
Lunch Care:
Supervision during lunch is free from noon to 1 pm for the week your child is enrolled in day camp. Children are required to bring a sack lunch or money to purchase lunch at the Museum’s 1930’s Soda Fountain. (For a full Soda Fountain menu, please visit the Museum’s Web site at www.dwhm.org.) After eating, the children may play games, or participate in fun activities led by education staff.
CANCELLATION POLICY
All cancellations MUST be made two weeks prior to the first day of the session. Cancellations are subject to a 20% processing fee. No refunds will be given without two weeks prior notification. Full refunds will be issued if the class is full or cancelled by the Museum.

Morning Session: 9 am – Noon
I’m a Detective
The Museum has a mystery that needs to be solved. Are you the person to solve it? Campers will work on the skills that real detectives use to solve crimes: finger printing, observation, logical thinking and problem solving. At the end of the week, solve a life-sized clue mystery at the Museum!
Afternoon Session: 1 -4 pm
Recycled Art
Join the “Green” movement with this great program. Create one-of-a kind treasures by using everyday recyclables. Learn about the environment and ways you can help make the world a better place to live in now and in the future.
June 23 – 27
Morning Session: 9 am – Noon
Amazon Adventure!
Visit the Amazon without leaving Omaha! This camp will focus on our traveling exhibit, “Amazon Voyage:
Vicious Fishes and Other Riches” from the Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium. Through hands
on projects, games, and daily visits to the exhibit, campers will learn everything there is to know about
this remarkable region, its creatures, culture, and history.
The World is your Stage
Take a step behind the stage curtain and find out what it takes to be an actor or actress. Learn about costumes, props, stage presence, make-up and more. We’ll round off the week with an on-stage premiere of our very own production in the new Stanley & Dorothy Truhlsen Lecture Hall.
Afternoon Session: 1 – 4 pm
Around the World in Five Days
Grab your passport, pack your bags and get your ticket ready for a bona fide adventure. This camp will take you to lands near and far as you go around the world without ever leaving Omaha. You’ll discover a different culture each day as you learn about their customs, games, food and everyday life.

Nebraska’s Backyard
Did you know that Nebraska has preserved dinosaur fossils in it’s soil? That the beach in Ogallala, Nebraska, is made of the same mountains that we find in Colorado? hat there is a sea beneath your feet? Learn about these unique facts and more in Nebraska’s Backyard. Everyday a different adventure is made by discovering fun facts about the bugs, plants, animals, and people that make our state special.

If your summer could use a dash of fun, a spoonful of excitement and a little magic, then join us for one of our most popular camps. Wizard School allows campers to learn about magic through interactive experiments, games, magic tricks and crafts. Sign up quick before your chance vanishes in a puff of smoke. POOF!
July 7 – 11
Morning Session: 9 am – Noon
President for a Week (Smithsonian)
Explore aspects of democracy, the United States, state and local government. With tours of the Museum, guest speakers, games and interactive projects, campers will learn the processes by which we are governed. Campers will even design their own political movement, create campaign materials and practice public speeches to enhance their public speaking skills.
Home on the Range
It’s time to grab your bedroll as we head into the Wild West. Ever wonder how to lasso a steer, ride a horse, read a brand or live like a cowboy/cowgirl? Now is your chance to learn all this and more! We’ll even head on over to American Legacy Stables for some good ol’ fashioned riding lessons.

Living on the Edge
You think you’ve done it all? Well guess again. This camp will keep you on your toes. Based on the books “The Dangerous Book for Boys” and “The Daring Book for Girls,” we cover topics on everything from spies and pirates to games and cooking. There is sure to be
something for everyone. Camps may be divided into two gender-based groups depending on attendance.
July 14 – 18

Boot Camp
Getting fit can be fun! Learn about living a healthy lifestyle. Diet and exercise, plenty of great activities, guest speakers and a field trip will make this one camp that is sure to stretch your summer fun.
Afternoon Session: 1 – 4 pm
Log Cabin Living
Pack up the wagon and hitch up the horses, because we are westward bound! Experience the life of a pioneer in early Nebraska. This camp will give you the opportunity to spend a week in our log cabin exploring cabin life, what kids did for fun, what chores kids did and what an average school day was like. Do you have what it takes to be a Pioneer?

From Vincent van Gogh to Andy Warhol, discover a different artist each day in this class. Learn about their different styles of art and then use what you have learned to create your own masterpiece. Then finish up your week by unveiling masterpieces at your very own Art Show.

You are so dramatic!
Now is your time to shine! Take center stage one more time and let your imagination run wild. Find out about the little secrets actors use to develop their character and make it believable, through costume, make-up and expression. It’s “Lights! Camera! Action!” one last time before the curtain goes down on another summer.
Afternoon Session: 1 – 4 pm
On the Trail
Take a scientific journey along with two of the best known explorers, Lewis and Clark, and their trusty guide, Sacagawea. Discover the route they took across the new land and what riches they encountered along the way. Through daily hands-on activities, you’ll get a chance to learn about the plant life, animals and
amazing characters they met along the way.

Meet the Generals who led the charges and local heroes who answered the call.

Did you know that you’ll find the tallest waterfall, highest lake and the second highest mountain range all in Latin America? Join us as we discover this rich and amazing culture. Learn about the civilizations and ancient ruins of the Mayans, Aztecs and Incas. This is bound to be one amazing trip, without ever leaving Omaha.

Native American Life
Did you know: that in the Omaha and Ponca tribes, Eagle feathers were only given to those who did good deeds, that one of the biggest Native American Civil Rights trials was held in Omaha, or that the first female Native American doctor was from the Omaha Tribe? Find out all of this and much more as you spend the week learning about the tribes that called Nebraska home.

Soldier in the Civil War I
Attention! Are you ready to experience the life of a Civil War Solider? This camp will take you through everyday life from drills and field formations, to the events and history behind some of the biggest battles. You even take a trip to the Forrest Lawn Cemetery and learn about local Civil War heroes.
Just Bead It!
Let your creativity run wild as you create art you can wear. This camp combines two of our most popular camps: “Art to Wear” and “Jewelry Making” into one great week. Where else do you get the chance to make some great wearable gifts for family and friends (and even cooler ones for yourself)?
